The Role

Mechanical Engineers are experienced in introducing and developing technical engineered solutions that,
meet customer needs and specifications, comply with external and internal quality control, approval and
health and safety requirements and are effectively integrated into manufacturing processes and
procedures to maximise use of resources and materials in the most cost effective way possible.
The Principal Mechanical Engineer must lead the Mechanical Engineering Team and Toolroom Team.
Proactively identify and develop / lead continuous improvement opportunities across both
departments; Ensure that all objectives & targets for both teams are met.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, develop and manage The Mech E Team & Toolroom Teams, including HS& E matters. Manage
team and individual performance to ensure all targets & objectives are met.; Carry out appraisals;
Identify and address training & development needs; Deal with disciplinary matters arising.
• Manage financial and output performance of both Teams. Ensure effective management of
toolroom resources. Ensure all records and databases relevant to the Teams work are maintained as
accurate and up to date, results analysed, and changes made as appropriate to the efficient working
of the teams. Work with GVSL on Toolroom capacity and loading and allocation of in-house and
external resources for design and tool manufacture.
• Lead, develop and oversee trials and analysis of new design and tool manufacture processes and
procedures. Produce reports including cost benefit analysis and recommendations on how the latest
technology and processes can be utilised for the benefit of the business.
• Liaise with Commercial, subcontractors, Engineering & Quality Engineers, Production teams, to
agree workloads / priorities.
• Ensure up to date knowledge and expertise is maintained in the latest technology and
manufacturing processes and procedures and maximise their use for the benefit of the business.
Job Requirements
• Preferred: Qualified to degree level or equivalent in an engineering discipline with an interest in
manufacturing
• Minimum: HNC or equivalent in an engineering discipline with relevant industrial experience.
• Demonstrated proven expert in a number of design and tool manufacture
• Excellent communication skills, oral and written including report writing to internal and external
customers
• Ability to prioritise and manage conflicting demands whilst meeting operational deadline
requirements.
• High level of skill in use of relevant application and use software in order to fulfil requirements
of the role e.g. CAD, CAM, SPC and other programs
• High level of numeracy & literacy
• High level computer skills
• Proven ability in latest problem solving techniques

The Role

To operate and inspect work from 3 or more machines for the manufacture of aero engine components.

To support trainees in obtaining their OK stamp status by acting as a formal trainer, mentor and assessor.

This position is based at our Newton Abbot, UK facility and will report to the Production Manager.

Key Responsibilities

• Clean and load components in fixture using correct datum faces
• When operating machines carry out work in line with appropriate standard operating procedures (SOPs) and company procedures
• When the machining cycle is complete, remove, clean, and inspect the part
• Maintain correct working order of the machine, by making appropriate adjustments to tooling and coolant flow as and when required
• Liaise with Inspection to check first off before starting full batch run
• Use appropriate hand tools to deburr work
• Visually Inspect and measure components to ensure compliance with specification
• Use optical, manual, electronic, digital gauges and tooling as supplied
• Calibrate and operate micro-PCRs (programmed measurement instruments) – in accordance with planning requirements
• Carry out inspections on other operators’ work – especially those not qualified to inspect their own work e.g., operators undergoing training
• Complete manual and PC based production records, recording components completed and identifying those not conforming to specification on “non-conformance notes”. Stamp “OK” or enter into the paperless manufacturing centre (PLMC) Segregate non-conforming parts. Take completed batch to next operation
• Train, assess and mentor new team members, in line with individual competence.
• Maintain work area in a clean and safe condition, report any problems to cell supervision, cell manufacturing support operative (MSO) and/or Maintenance
• Maintain machines in a running condition by changing consumables as required. e.g., cutters, grinding wheels and electrodes
• Hand finish components to planning requirements
• Demonstrate and promote in-cell standardisation by maintaining health & safety, 6S, SOPs, daily check sheets, front line asset care, machine first off procedures and date calibration checks
• Book off work in accordance with all production and quality requirements.

The main weekend shift in which we run at MB Aerospace Newton Abbot is;

5:30pm – 6:00am Friday to Sunday (for 1 weekend) = 50% Shift Premium
6:00am – 6:30pm Saturday, 6.00am – 6:00pm Sunday (for 1 weekend) = 50% Shift Premium
Where weekend shift is worked, a premium of 50% is applied, taking the hourly rate.

Job Requirements

• To meet company behavioural and technical competence standards.
• To have obtained OK Stamp status.
• Meeting daily production targets whilst maintaining quality standards.
• Ability to work a range of shifts.
• Relevant safety certificates e.g. grinding wheel certification
• Proficient in the use of measuring instruments e.g., vernier, gauges, micrometres, and electronic gauges.
• 6 months experience essential.
• Knowledge of cutter characteristics and tool life advantageous.
• Ability to follow company planning and procedures and recognize abbreviations/symbols.
• Willing to enrol in MB Aerospace funded opportunities to study production and engineering qualifications such as Performing Manufacturing Operations Level 2.
• Successful applicants will be subject to a 6 monthly review process, to ensure they continue to meet the behavioural and technical standards expected within the position as defined by the company.
